Access and Acquisitions Services
Circulation
Although Circulation has traditionally been considered a public service, which it is, automation has relegated many of the labor-intensive technical services tasks to Circulation staff, such as:
- Creating a brief bibliographic record on the fly in order to circulate an item not yet cataloged
- Replacing a barcode, or attaching a barcode to an item and identifying the correct bibliographic record for linking holdings information
- Updating data in the online catalog
With the advent of automation, Circulation staff requires training in computer use, keyboarding, and basic cataloging.
Sussex County Department of Libraries and 14 public libraries in Sussex County are part of the consortium of Delaware Libraries utilizing the SirsiDynix system.
Inter-Library Loan
Sussex County Department of Libraries serves as a resource for materials that are not available through the Delaware Library Catalog online, nor from other libraries outside of the Delaware Library Catalog system but within the State of Delaware. The OCLC Interlibrary Loan service extends the reach of our libraries beyond the Delaware to participating libraries of the United States. In this manner, we are able to provide patrons the information they need, whether from our collections or elsewhere.

Acquisitions Services
Acquisition Services consists of the selection and purchase of library materials for use by the public and/or the staff.
Library directors and support staff select materials for purchase based on the Collection Development Policy. Orders are placed by the Library Assistant for Acquisitions Services. Once materials are received, they are passed to Cataloging Services.
